Today the USPTO sent out a warning to trademark attorneys advising that “bad actors” have been changing attorney of record and correspondent information on trademark applications.
The scheme apparently involves forging the attorney of record’s signature and either removing or replacing the email address on file.
Officials warn that attorneys should be on the lookout for changes to their filings and says that those with an email address on file will receive notification of the changes from the official TEAS@uspto.gov email account with the subject line, “Alert USPTO Change of Email Address."
Many of the victims of this scheme have been filers whose applications don’t include correspondent email addresses, however, so filers may need to proactively check their filings on TESS or my.uspto.gov.
